    IdentificationA stocky silver-grey fish to 75cmSL (usually ~40cmSL), with Depth at Pelvic Fin 1:4 D:SL. COLOUR silvery-grey with darker narrow discontinuous bars, fins uniform. DORSAL with 17-18 spines, tallest centrally; 2nd Dorsal starts well before Anal. LATERAmore...L LINE splits ~5th Dorsal Spine with top branch following upper body, and lower branch dropping vertically and going rearward along the lower body.
    Similar SpeciesPromethichthys prometheus is much more slender (1:7 D:SL) (vs 1:4), and lateral line descends and runs rearward mid-body (vs lower body).
